Alcatel Australia - Web Developer Employee August 1999 - September 2000

After being employed by Alcatel my role evolved to producing an external document access system and defect tracking system for Telstra (called ECIC). These systems were designed to provide a simple external user interface to Telstra that was updated automatically by Alcatel staff following their existing Document release and Defect tracking procedures.

Self Employed Consultant / Technical Writer & Web Developer - April 1992 - July 1999

During this period I was a self-employed Documentation Consultant, Technical Writer and Web Developer. My skills and experience allowed me to not only produce concise, well written documentation quickly, but also understand the broader issues of producing, maintaining and distributing documentation and design, code, implement and document a web based document management tool.

    Alcatel Australia

From May 1993 to July 1999 I was on a full time contract at Alcatel Australia providing the following services:

    • Production of operator and technical manuals, product overviews and training material for a range of telecommunications equipment. This has included a number of SDH and PDH multiplexers, customer access equipment and network management software. The total volume of work is in excess of 5000 pages produced primarily using Interleaf on a SUN.

    • Developed Interleaf courses and course material and delivery of training for around 150 staff (from beginner to advanced level).

    • Design and maintenance of an internal web page including development dozens of cgi and related applications including a time sheet system, survey tool and a full web based document management system integrating with at least 10 existing internal Alcatel systems (still in use & managing over 20,000 documents).

    • Developed a system converting raw SGML into an on-line viewable format, similar to Windows Help, for use with HP OpenVue.

    • Creation of Perl applications for converting between several document formats including Interleaf to and from HTML.

    • Development and maintenance of a complete, web based document management system for storage and retrieval of viewable documents, and archival of source information.

    • Provision of technical support for Unix, DOS, Windows 3.1 & Windows 95, Windows NT, Macintoshes many applications including Interleaf, Microsoft Word, WordPerfect (v5.1 and Windows) and FrameMaker.

    • Joint development of user interfaces for network management software.

    Other Contracts

    Morgan and Banks (1992)

Morgan and Banks commissioned my skills for a number of small internal projects including documentation a small Clipper Program called the Client Tracking Management System, documenting simple technical procedures and conducting an Introductory Macintosh course.

    State Rail Authority (1992)

My contract with the SRA involved the production of a presentation and an information booklet on seating arrangements for the Endeavour Diesel Rail cars, and documenting the variation procedures for the Endeavour project. The booklet and presentation analysed some of the issues affecting seat selection and provided statistics and diagrams to illustrate possible seat layouts.

    Fisher Controls (1992)

The Fisher Controls contract was a 3 month project documenting a customised, Unix based accounting package called Intergy. The task was to define a format for the manual, then document the packages' eight modules including procedures, flow diagrams, and so on.

    Royal Women's Hospital (1992)

In May 1992 I evaluated and produced a report on a medical rostering software package for the Royal Women's Hospital. The package had been installed for about 2 years and was felt to be incapable of adequately performing the tasks for which it was purchased. The report focused on several sets of circumstances under which the package reliably produced erroneous staffing rosters.

Advance Peripherals - Technical Services Manager

    (August 1988 to April 1992)

Much of my early technical expertise was gained from my role as Technical Services Manager at Advance Peripherals. My duties included:

    • Providing technical support to computer dealers

    • Assembling PCs & installing hard drives

    • Documenting product installation procedures

    • Developing business plans

    • Evaluating products

    • Sales

    • Writing technical newsletters, marketing material, etc.

The experience of building many PCs from scratch and supporting all kinds of PC and Macintosh cards and peripherals helped me build an extensive knowledge of a wide range of PC and Macintosh products and architecture. In addition, I gained a fundamental knowledge of networking and Unix.

    Other Recent Contracts

In addition to the contract detailed above, Tim has engaged in several other contracts through AZ Tech Consulting. These include several jobs relating to Macintosh and Windows NT support, and a contract to develop a document management functional requirements specification for a government department.

    Other Contracts (1992-1993)

    Other Contracts completed include:

    • Development and delivery of a training course on Letter Perfect for a travel agency.

The booklet and presentation analysed some of the issues affecting seat selection and provided statistics and diagrams to illustrate possible seat layouts.
    • Documented a customised, Unix based accounting package. The task was to define a format for the manual, then document the packages' eight modules including procedures, flow diagrams, etc.
    • Evaluated and produced a report on a medical rostering software package. The package had been installed for about 2 years and was felt to be incapable of adequately performing the tasks for which it was purchased. The report focused on several sets of circumstances under which the package reliably produced erroneous staffing rosters.
